Cancer research is one of the fundamental research areas of the Medical University Vienna. In terms of interdisciplinarity I am exceptionally pleased about the foundation of the initiative “RedPaw – cancer research for pets” in cooperation with the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Our inspiring example is the American “National Cancer Institute”, which launched a "Comparative Oncology Trials Consortium (COTC)". The transfer of knowledge accompanying this initiative against cancer uncloses new approaches in the treatment and alleviation of a disease that has become the major burden of our society.

In the course of their common history, human- and veterinary medicine have always complemented each other and helped to establish new insights. I am very pleased about this cooperation in the field of cancer research in which yet again medical- and veterinary medical knowledge will unite to form a new path to progress. The University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna supports the initiative “RedPaw – cancer research for pets” in every sense.

In my opinion, „RedPaw – cancer research for pets“ is an initiative that is long overdue. Why shouldn´t veterinary and medical colleagues perform cooperative research? Humans and animals have many similar biochemical and biological mechanisms – and in both cases, a breakdown of the body´s own control systems can lead to tumor growth. Together, we have the chance to develop therapies against cancer that benefit both animals and humans.

I welcome the initiative "RedPaw – cancer research for pets", because mechanisms of carcinogenesis are similar in humans and animals. Likewise, similar therapeutic options could be “universally” applied. Cooperative studies of the medical and veterinary medical university could contribute crucially to gaining a better understanding of cancer and unclosing new therapeutic strategies. The National Cancer Institute in the USA has shown, that this is the right path to take. The "RedPaw", located in Austria, will encourage interdisciplinary projects and can thereby significantly advance this development.

The University Clinic for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine definitely welcomes the initiative Rote Pfote - cancer resarch for pets. The department's  major target is pedatric neurooncology, clinically as well as in matters of basic research. The close cooperation with the University of Veterinary Medicine in the specialist division of neurooncologic research is about to become of major importance for involved patients. Important elements  in the origin of cancer  and new therapies for brain cancer in cats an dogs are going to reveal essential insight for human patients.

In my opinion, “RedPaw – cancer research for pets” is an extremely important and interesting project! It offers the possibility to incorporate the newest insights of tumor biology into the therapy of our for-legged friends while advancing the therapeutic options available to human cancer patients as well. A symbiotic relationship!

Connecting with an animal enriches everybody´s life, because animals are so much more than just our pets – they are sources of strength, partners and friends. „RedPaw“ takes this bond between animals and man further, by encouraging cancer research that benefits both. For this very reason I am happy to support this initiative.

True to my motto "Es gibt nichts Gutes, außer man tut es" (if nothing good is done, nothing good can happen) I fully support the initiative “RedPaw – cancer research for pets”. Austria can resort to excellent resources and technical establishments in the field of cancer research. We must use this chance. It will be in our power to help countless cancer patients once clinical studies become increasingly available to us. New insights will benefit humans as well as animals and therefore have the potential to save lives.
