I welcome the initiative "RedPaw – cancer research for pets", because mechanisms of carcinogenesis are similar in humans and animals. Likewise, similar therapeutic options could be “universally” applied. Cooperative studies of the medical and veterinary medical university could contribute crucially to gaining a better understanding of cancer and unclosing new therapeutic strategies. The National Cancer Institute in the USA has shown, that this is the right path to take. The "RedPaw", located in Austria, will encourage interdisciplinary projects and can thereby significantly advance this development.
